Supporting your Child
How can parents support their child’s education?
Parents can play a key role in their child’s success by getting involved in their learning every day. Here are some practical ideas:
- Read regularly – Spend time reading with your child, even if they are old enough to read on their own. Discuss the story and ask questions like “What happens next?” or “Why did the character do that?” to develop understanding.
- Everyday maths – Use daily situations to practise numeracy, e.g., counting money while shopping, measuring ingredients when cooking, or working out the time on the clock.
- Create a positive learning environment – Make sure they have a quiet space for homework, with good lighting and the necessary resources (pencils, books, calculator).
- Praise effort – Celebrate their effort as well as their achievements. This builds confidence and shows that learning is a process.
- Talk about school – Ask every day what they learned or what their favourite part of the day was. This shows interest and encourages communication skills.
- Use digital resources wisely – If there are educational apps or websites, use them in moderation as a fun way to reinforce learning.
- Work with teachers – Keep in touch with the school, attend parent meetings, and ask for specific ways to help at home.
